• Augustus was the great-nephew and adopted son of Julius Caesar (the Julia gens), although
• Tiberius was the adopted son of Augustus, he came from the Claudia gens.
• Caligula was a great grandson of Augustus.
• Claudius was a nephew of Tiberius
• Nero was the great-nephew and adopted son of Claudius
